What is photography to me?
Photography is all about contradiction.
It’s about place, emotion and imagination. All three have to work together to achieve something that is evocative of the spirit of the environment.
I make a conscious effort to avoid the studio, preferring to capture my subjects in their natural environment. Without the comfort of a controllable space I am left to grapple with the problem of how to exclude unnecessary distractions. My approach is to concentrate the viewer's attention; restricting their options, distilling and concentrating the key components of the image before them. My practice centres on presenting the enduring, and often hidden, essence of a scene.
